Yorkshire Salsa Congress salsa weekend was founded by Karen McQuire in 2015.
Karen started dancing in 2013 and quickly became hooked on not only the dance itself but her love and passion for the music.
In her endless search for great classes and the best teachers she travelled the length and breadth of the country to take part in special workshops, bootcamps and visited many congresses herself all to further her own dancing experience.
Born and bred in Wakefield and having grown up in the same town as the monumental Unity House now known as “Unityworks”, the temptation to hold her own Salsa Events in her own town and the urge to bring the “Best Salsa Professionals” to her own doorstep grew and grew.
In a quote from Karen she says:
“For those who know me – or even those who have seen my endless posts on FB – you will know I am PASSIONATE about Salsa and all things related. I am not a teacher, nor am I an old veteran of this wonderful scene – but I AM a complete addict and in my endeavours to satisfy the local needs for more events I decided to bring the kind of Workshops and Teachers we crave to our very own region.”
In 2015 she persuaded 2 local DJ/Promoters to hold a one off event with her, people came from all over the UK with numbers reaching 550 on opening night, born from that first event came the extremely popular biannual “SalsaUnity”.
Together with the dance events Karen wanted to bring some of the International Teachers so hosted her first specialised workshop in September 2016 with “Super Mario” aka “ Million Moves Man”, It soon became apparent that people wanted more and loved the workshops and the venue.
Yorkshire Salsa Congress was the next logical step for her and the “SalsaUnity” team.
